CITY OF TALLAHASSEE NEWS RELEASE

City Responding to Impacts From Tropical Storm Fay

City crews remain on alert and are continuing to respond to any problems occurring due to impacts from Tropical Storm Fay. The City’s Emergency Operations Center remains activated with partial staffing, to help coordinate response efforts to the storm.

City crews from Police, Fire, Utilities, Streets and Drainage, and Traffic Engineering remain on standby, and are ready to respond to problems that may develop. These crews are working in cooperation with Leon County employees to coordinate response efforts. Following are key actions the City has taken (updates in bold type):

Sand and bags are available around the clock at the following locations:

Messer Field South parking lot – along Jackson Bluff Road opposite the intersection with Dupree Street (this is a relocation of the site at the corner of Mabry Street and Bellevue Way)

Mitchell Avenue next to Winthrop Park

Lawrence-Gregory Community Center at Dade Street (1115 Dade St.)

NOTE: Citizens must bring their own shovels and be prepared to fill bags themselves; a limit of 25 bags per person exists at these three locations

As of 4 pm this afternoon, the City has distributed 8,000 sandbags and 21 truckloads of sand; all three City sandbag sites will be staffed until nightfall.

No flooding reported thus far; drainage/flooding response crews and tree-removal crews are on standby and ready to be deployed as needed

Barricades are positioned along city streets prone to flooding so emergency crews can block off roads quickly if necessary

The primary City phone number for storm-related inquiries, including power outages, downed trees or flooding is 891-4YOU (4968). Additional personnel have been called in, and will this number will be staffed throughout the night and Saturday.

Scattered power outages have been reported throughout the afternoon; all have been restored within an hour; Electric Utility crews remain on standby and are ready to be deployed as needed. As of 4:45 pm, approximately 3,900 customers are without power.

Four commercial flights at Tallahassee Regional Airport have been cancelled today; otherwise the airport is operating as normal. As additional flights throughout the afternoon and evening may be delayed or cancelled, passengers are reminded to contact airlines directly regarding the status of individual flights – customers may review the status of flights at Tallahassee Regional Airport online at Talgov.com. Cancelled flights thus far include:

9:05 am American Eagle flight to Miami

4:10 pm Continental flight to Tampa

6:10 pm Continental flight to Tampa

10:40 pm US Airways flight from Charlotte

The Electric Utility lowered the level of Lake Talquin by one foot in anticipation of heavy rains; river levels below the dam should remain below flood stage.

StarMetro has operated its normal schedule today, and will do so this evening and Saturday; the only cancelled route is tonight’s "Night Nole" route (operates 10 pm-3 am) serving Florida State University.

Solid Waste Services maintained normal collection schedules today

All Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs Department facilities, including the Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center, tennis courts, swimming pools and community centers will be closed both tonight and tomorrow. In addition, both neighborhood service centers will be closed tomorrow. The Animal Service Center has already closed this afternoon (normal closing time is 6:30 pm).

Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs has also postponed all fall youth sports registration activities scheduled for Saturday, August 23. This includes tackle football, flag football, cheerleading and volleyball. Registration will now take place Monday, August 25 at the same locations between 6 and 7 pm.

Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Affairs general public gymnastics call-in registration has been rescheduled from tomorrow to Monday, August 25 at 1 pm.

In addition, all games tonight for a Men’s Industrial national softball tournament have been cancelled. City staff and tournament officials will meet tomorrow morning to review the situation at that time.

A word of caution to motorists who must be on the road during heavy rain -- do not drive on streets where water covers the surface. There could be deep water or potholes caused by the flooding. Police officers will issue citations to drivers ignoring road barricades. In addition, motorists are reminded to approach intersections where a traffic signal is not working as a four-way stop.
