Saving the Family Farm? Agritourism Event Discusses Options

Our food grows in little Styrofoam containers and "sprouts" on grocery shelves, right? In a time when most people have never set foot on a farm, there is a new movement to learn where food comes from and experience rural ways of life. A North Florida tourism group, The Original Florida Tourism Task Force, hopes to capitalize on this trend.

The Original Florida Tourism Task Force and The UF/IFAS North Florida Research and Education Center-Suwannee Valley (NFREC-SV) are bringing Jane Eckert, a nationally renowned agritourism/agritainment speaker, to help tourism professionals and family farm operators learn about this emerging industry together. Ms. Eckert will explain ways the two groups can work together to help farmers supplement family incomes with agritourism– possibly a means to sustain family farms and rural Florida landscapes.

The registration fee is $25 which includes lunch, refreshments and program materials. The registration deadline is March 31, 2008 at 5 p.m. Visit http://nfrec-sv.ifas.ufl.edu to register or e-mail Karen Hancock at khancock@ifas.ufl.edu or call (386) 362-1725 for more information.
