Tallahassee CVB Artist of the Month, Mary Popp
Tallahassee, FL February 26 - through March 31, 2007 the Tallahassee Area Convention and Visitors Bureau will introduce Mary Popp at the Gallery at 106 E. Jefferson Street, downtown Tallahassee.
Mary Popp came to Tallahassee after studying Linguistics at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Since 2002 she has been the Visual Arts Coordinator at Pyramid Studios, an arts program for adults with developmental disabilities. As an artist, she is primarily a painter in the style of photorealism. She began to explore photography as a way to supplement the integrity of her paintings. Her style of composition is similar in both media with a focus on detail and the interplay of light and shadow.
"I hope that my photographs have an element of that sentiment in them. More often than not they are a part of a whole, somewhat
removed from their context. Their isolation may be of greater interest than that of the whole, or they may be merely a glimpse of something more that is only suggested by focusing on a small detail. They are also the product of a specific moment in time. On any other day, at any other hour, the lighting and shadows may have been completely different, but these moments are now frozen and held captive."
