Birding Spots in Tallahassee Florida

Wakulla County

The Great Florida Birding Trail (Panhandle Section-Wakulla County)Bottoms Rd. Pull-off

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south approximately 2.5 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on Gaile Avenue.  At the light, turn left onto Crawfordville Highway.  Proceed south to Capital Circle where US 319 joins.  Continue south on Crawfordville Highway, US 319, approximately 22 miles to Medart.  US 319 will divide from US 98, continue going straight on US 98 for 3 miles.  Turn left on Bottoms Road.  A small road-side sign 1.1 miles from US 98 marks the entrance to the Refuge.  Parking areas are along this road.

  • Alligator Point

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south approximately 2.5 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on Gaile Avenue.  At the light, turn left onto Crawfordville Highway.  Proceed south to Capital Circle where US 319 joins.  Continue south on Crawfordville Highway, US 319, approximately 22 miles to Medart.  US 319 will divide from US 98, continue going straight on US 98 for approximately 10 miles through Panacea and across the Ochlockonee Bay Bridge.  Turn left on Alligator Drive, County Road 370.  Go 3.7 miles pass Bald Point Drive and bear right at the road fork.  Parking is available at the public boat ramp.

  • Mashes Sands County Park

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south approximately 2.5 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on Gaile Avenue.  At the light, turn left onto Crawfordville Highway.  Proceed south to Capital Circle where US 319 joins.  Continue south on Crawfordville Highway, US 319, approximately 22 miles to Medart.  US 319 will divide from US 98, continue going straight on US 98 for approximately 10 miles through Panacea.  Turn left on Mashes Sands Road, County Road 372 (just prior to the Ochlockonee Bay Bridge).  Proceed 2.4 miles to the park entrance.

  • Wakulla Beach Road

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south on South Monroe Street to Capital Circle where FL 363 joins.  Continue south on FL 363, Woodville Highway, approximately 13 miles.  Turn right on US 98.  Drive 3.4 miles and turn left on Wakulla Beach Road.

Liberty County

The Great Florida Birding Trail (Panhandle Section-Liberty County)

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south 0.2 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on East Gaines Street. East Gaines Street will turn into Stadium Drive.  Drive around the Stadium and turn left on Pensacola Street.  Follow Pensacola Street to Capital Circle.  Continue straight on SR 20, Blountstown Highway, for approximately 28 miles.  Turn left on SR 65 for approximately 29 miles to Sumatra.  Turn left on County Road 22 for 1.4 miles.  The site is located on the right side of the road.  Park and walk the road back to the pond.

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south 0.2 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on East Gaines Street.  Follow East Gaines Street around the Stadium and turn left on Pensacola Street.  Follow Pensacola Street to Capital Circle.  Continue straight on SR 20, Blountstown Highway, for approximately 28 miles.  Turn left on SR 65 for approximately 28 miles to Sumatra.  Turn right onto CR 379. Go approximately 6 miles and turn right on Forest Road 123.  This road can be driven as a loop. At the intersection, turn left onto FR 180.  FR 180 will end at SR 379, 1.5 miles further north.

Franklin County

The Great Florida Birding Trail (Panhandle Section-Franklin County)

Directions from the State Capitol:  Go south approximately 2.5 miles on South Monroe Street.  Turn right on Gaile Avenue.  At the light, turn left onto Crawfordville Highway.  Proceed south to Capital Circle where US 319 joins.  Continue south on Crawfordville Highway, US 319, approximately 22 miles to Medart.  US 319 will divide from US 98, continue going straight on US 98 for approximately 19.2 miles. US-98 turns slightly to the left.  Follow US-98 for 32.4 miles to Apalachicola. At the intersection where US 98 takes a left (west), go straight on Market Street.  When the road ends at the marina, turn left and proceed a short distance to the Nature Center entrance.  Parking is available immediately inside the entrance.  The Nature Walk trailhead is across the parking lot from the Nature Center.

  • Apalachicola Bird Island

Directions from the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Unit 4 (above):  Go out and make a right on Market Street.  Market Street ends at US-98.  Go straight on US-98 and cross John Gorrie Bridge.  Pull off the highway on the right when you reach the causeway.
